Autumn Flowers and a Step-by-Step Guide to Making a Pumpkin Arrangement
Autumn is a season rich with colour and warmth, and this is beautifully reflected in the flowers that bloom during this time. From the fiery reds of chrysanthemums to the golden hues of sunflowers, autumn flowers add a touch of natural elegance to any setting. At Richards Floral Design, we celebrate the season by crafting arrangements that capture the essence of autumnal beauty.
Popular Autumn Flowers
Chrysanthemums: Known for their vibrant reds, yellows, and oranges.
Sunflowers: Bright and cheerful, perfect for bringing warmth indoors.
Marigolds: Deep orange and yellow petals, symbolising the harvest.
Asters: Soft purple and pink tones, adding a delicate touch.
Dahlias: Rich, layered blooms in autumn tones.
Cosmos: Light, airy flowers often found in shades of pink, white, and magenta.
These flowers not only reflect the changing season but also embody the comforting atmosphere autumn invites.
Step-by-Step Guide to Making a Pumpkin Flower Arrangement
What You’ll Need:
A medium-sized pumpkin
Autumnal flowers (a mix of chrysanthemums, sunflowers, dahlias, and asters works well)
Floral foam
A sharp knife
Scissors or floral shears
Water
Optional: foliage like eucalyptus or autumn leaves for extra texture
Instructions:
Prepare the Pumpkin:
Use a sharp knife to carefully slice off the top of the pumpkin, creating a lid.
Scoop out the inside, removing all seeds and pulp to leave a hollow space ready for flowers.
Soak the Floral Foam:
Cut the floral foam to fit snugly inside the hollow pumpkin.
Soak the foam in water until fully saturated.
Insert the Floral Foam:
Place the soaked foam inside the pumpkin. It should fit securely to hold the stems in place.
Trim the Flower Stems:
Cut flower stems to varying lengths, depending on your desired arrangement height and fullness.
Arrange the Flowers:
Begin inserting the flowers into the foam. Start with larger blooms like sunflowers and dahlias.
Fill in gaps with smaller flowers such as asters and chrysanthemums.
Add foliage or autumn leaves as accents to create depth and texture.
Maintain the Arrangement:
Keep the foam moist by adding water daily to extend the life of your arrangement.
Place your pumpkin arrangement in a cool spot away from direct sunlight.
This simple yet striking pumpkin flower arrangement beautifully captures the spirit of autumn, making it ideal for displaying at home or gifting to loved ones.
